About this concert:
Royal Opera House's solo cellist, Tim Hugh, together with LICMF's Artistic Director, Alissa Firsova, open this year's festival with three composers who fled Russia to find their freedom in the West. Rachmaninoff's "Oh do not sing, fair maiden", beautifully reflects the nostalgia of a land left behind. Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel, written just before his emigration, became one of his most popular works and reaches some unbelievably moving dimensions. Prokofiev's Sonata is packed with wonderful tunes and playfulness. At the heart of this programme, we celebrate Schubert's 225th birth anniversary with his immortal Arpeggione Sonata.
